A temple was famous for a string of prayer beads worn by the Buddha. Only the old abbot and 7 disciples knew where the prayer beads were worshipped.
The seven disciples were very savvy. Passing the mantle to any of them will promote the Dharma.
But one day, the string disappeared.
The old abbot asked the disciples: “Which of you took the string? Please put it back.” The disciples all shook their heads.
7 days later, the string was not back. 7 more days passed, still, no one admitted.
The abbot was disappointed: “Tomorrow you can leave. Whoever took the string, you may stay to clarify.” The next day, 6 disciples packed up, breathed a long sigh of relief, left quietly. Only one stayed.
The abbot asked: “Where is the string?”
“I didn’t take it.”
“Then why do you recite the name of stealing?”
“We have been suspicious of each other these days. Only if someone stands up can others get the relief. Besides, the string is gone, but the Buddha is still there.”
The abbot smiled, took out the string, put it on the disciple’s hand.
Not everything needs to be clarified. However, it is more important that: to be able to bear, to act, to resolve, to reverse, to take charge, and to change.
Morning, friends. ❤️☕
